Science Students Have A Day on the Lake

Students determine the acidity or alkalinity of lake water.

Students learn the importance of obtaining a representative sample of the lake water before testing.

Volunteer Linda Burgert demonstrates how our lake remains ‘full’ of water from the groundwater reservoirs even during extended drought.

Students lower the Secchi disk into the lake to measure lake clarity.

Maureen Stine, Tip of the Mitt, shows students the correct way to use a life preserver.

Paul Weston helps students measure the water clarity with a Secchi disc.

Students examine lake sediment to determine health of the lake. Zebra mussels were numerous, insect larvae were harder to find at the 60-foot depth.

Volunteer Audrey Etienne explains how our drinking water can become contaminated as slow-moving pollutants in the groundwater approach our wells.
